Meet The Team

Neil Ruddell

Partner

Neil spent his early life on a dairy farm in the Mangakahia district and graduated from Northland Polytechnic. He gained experience in local business firms before joining Russell Turner in 1987, becoming a partner in 1990.


Neil is well known as a former Northland rugby player - with 131 appearances he is the sixth most capped Northlander. He is married to Diane, and they have three children and five grandchildren. His leisure time is now filled with family, bridge, and wood turning.

Gavin Buckingham

Partner

Gavin has a firm farming focus, assisting clients to run their businesses in a practical, efficient manner.

 

After leaving the family farm in Kaitaia and graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2000, he gained experience in Auckland before moving north to become partner at Russell Turner in 2007.


Gavin is married to Ursula, and they have three school-age children. They live rurally on a six hectare lifestyle block and run a 210 hectare beef farm at Puhipuhi. Gavin is a keen diver, fisherman and sports enthusiast, albeit through his children now!


Gavin's farming experience, interest in the rural sector and business acumen allow him to see the bigger picture, including succession planning to aid his clients.

Eddie Roberts

Partner

Eddie assists clients to run their ventures efficiently with maximum tax benefits and tangible results. He specialises in owner-operated business accounting.


Eddie was born and educated in Whangarei before heading to Auckland University in 1995 where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce. After a two-year OE he headed back to Auckland and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce.


He started work in Auckland for Gosling Chapman (now Crowe Horwath), and moved to Grant Thornton in 2004, before heading north in 2006 to work at Russell Turner for his father, Bill Roberts. Eddie became a partner in 2007.


He is a keen fisherman, diver and paddleboarder, and plays football for Central Brown. He is married to Brigid; they have three children and live on 10 acres at Portland, farming sheep and cattle.

Barbara Gailey

Partner

Barbara's interests include startups, growth and productivity. She became a partner in 2014, and also manages a satellite Russell Turner office at Ruakaka. 


Barbara was brought up on a farm at Waikiekie and was dux of Tauraroa Area School. She gained experience at local firms before moving south, where she worked for Keith Wedlock, former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. 


Barbara was admitted to the Institute in 1995. She has served as co-convenor of the Auckland Young Accountants Tax Group, on Tauraroa Area School's finance subcommittee and Board of Trustees, as treasurer of the Manawatu Homebirth Association, as a trustee of the Waikiekie Cemetery and is involved with the Whangarei Growers Market. In winter she enjoys following the Southern Districts Premiers rugby competition.

David Harris

Partner

David was born and raised in Whangarei. He graduated Massey University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Accounting, and gained his Chartered Accountancy in 2010.

 

He has a broad range of accounting experience, and a passion for innovation, mentoring and finding solutions that add value to clients' businesses.

 

David is married to wife Arna-Lise, together they have six children. They live on a lifestyle block in Maungatapere where enjoy the rural outlook as well as the responsibilities of animals.

 

In his spare time you can find him mountain biking, playing music, at the beach, spending time with friends and family or watching his children play winter sports.

Nigel Brereton

Consultant

Nigel was born in Motueka, where he spent his early years on a sheep and tobacco farm. When he was 12 he moved to Papua New Guinea with his family. He was then shipped off to boarding school in Sydney for the final two years of high school.


After finishing his schooling, he headed to Otago University to study for a Bachelor of Commerce. Nigel spent four years working for Ernst and Young before moving back to PNG to an accounting role in a manufacturing business. After two years, two break-ins, an armed hold-up and a stolen car, Nigel headed to Australia with his wife Helen to work as a group accountant in country Queensland for four years. Now Nigel and Helen have three boys - Billy, Daniel and Matthew - and live in Whangarei. Nigel spends his spare time watching the boys' sports, fishing, sailing and playing farmer.


Nigel's focus is on business development, strategic planning and governance. He specialises in helping clients grow, change and achieve their dreams.

Bill Roberts

Consultant

Bill is a former partner at Russell Turner, who has stepped into a consulting role after 33 years in the driving seat. 


He was born in Te Kopuru and educated at Whangarei Boys' High School. After completing his accountancy qualifications in 1971 he spent two years on assignment with Volunteer Services Abroad in the Pacific Islands.


He was Chairman of Directors, Mercy Hospital Northland for nine years and is a charter member and past president of Whangarei South Rotary Club.



Bill and his wife Bev have four children and nine grandchildren, and enjoy family times at the beach, fishing and travelling.

Brian Moyle

Consultant

Brian was born and educated in Whangarei and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1970. He formed his own accounting practice before merging with Russell Turner. Brian has been treasurer for the Anglican Parish of Whangarei since 1991 and has a personal involvement in farming and farm management.



He and wife Jenice have two married children, and they enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.

Sally Roberts

Manager

Sally was born and educated in Whangarei before leaving in 1999 to study at the University of Auckland. After completing a bachelor's degree in science and commerce she travelled for 14 months, working in Ireland to fund travels to Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Africa and Europe.


Back in Auckland she spent four years working for WHK Gosling Chapman, gaining her membership to the Institute of Chartered Accountants along the way.


An advocate for work life balance, Sally competed in the 2008 Speights Coast to Coast 2-day individual multisport event. She headed to Kuala Lumpur for a two-month contract with MYOB Accountants Resourcing where she was involved in developing systems and training the locals in preparing New Zealand financial accounts.


Taking the long way home she toured through south-east Asia, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Croatia and Slovenia as well as spending time with her sister in the Netherlands. She enjoys the water, gathering seafood for the BBQ and lives with her partner and their two sons at Purua, west of Whangarei. Sally is a member of CAANZ.

Andrew Wakelin

Manager

Andrew has lived in Whangarei most of his life, growing up on a Whangarei beef farm. He studied at Northland Polytechnic and graduated with a Diploma in Business and a Bachelor of Business Management. Andrew spent a couple of years working in London in accounting roles before re-joining Russell Turner.


In his spare time Andrew can be found on the golf course. He also enjoys fishing and diving and keeps fit as a member of the Whangarei Rowing club.
