Alex McLean was a quietly spoken Waipu stalwart who loved highland games, daffodils and preserving local history.
Born Roderick Alexander McLean in 1917, he served two and a half years in the military and was posted to the Pacific in World War II. Alex returned to work on the family farm near Waipu, was involved with the Waipu Museum, became a patron of the Waipu Highland Games, and was a staunch supporter of IHC.

Alex died in 2007 aged 90. He left no immediate family – his wife Dorothy and son Peter died before he did – so he set up a trust to benefit others. The Alex McLean Charitable Trust was established with a Northland focus, aiming to support community, education, youth and disabled facilities and services.
